Shelf Fungus

Shelf Fungus growing on a pecan tree.

The tree was hit by lightning several years ago, splitting the bark. Woodpeckers hunting insects made two cavities in which some interesting fungi have grown.

The weight of this piece caused it to fold down.

I have not experimented with writing or drawing on pieces of this fungus to see if it serves the same purpose as Artist's Conk. If it works, it might make some interesting garden signs. Pieces in previous years fell to the ground and were eaten by animals, perhaps for the protein contained in the fungi.

  1. Love the shelf fungus defying gravity it seems. Feels like GA weather here today! Hot and humid with thunder in the air. Thanks for visiting me at Ledge and Gardens.

I look forward to comments and questions and lively discussion of gardening and related ideas.
