Gotcha! Embedded Music Grabs Me

I went to a blog and  was well into reading an interesting post.
Suddenly, hidden music loaded and began to blare, not my cuppa tea. I frantically scrolled up and down.

I turned the music OFF. I continued to read.

Clicked to Comment about the content of the post, which was truly good.
The music turned itself back on.

I turned it off. I had to scroll up and down to find this thing again.

Clicked to Submit my Comment.
The music turned itself back on.

More scrolling, I turned it off.

Clicked again to add the 'code' so my Comment would load.
The music turned itself back on.

More scrolling; I turned it off for the fourth time.

Clicked to Submit my Comment.
The music turned itself back on.

Is it still Halloween?

  1. I am like you. Just don't prefer to have embedded music on blogs. I love music just not on blogs. I just turn my computer on silence when I am blog jumping that way I don't have to look for where it is embedded.

  2. I also hate music in blogs. I can't read and listen to music at the same time. I always have my computer on mute so I don't have to hear it.

  3. Nell Jean, you have more patience than I, for I would have been gone the second time.

  4. I'm with you -- I detest them, especially those that do take a few seconds to load and scare you half to death when they do. :) If the player were located at the top of a sidebar or somewhere where you could choose an option of play or no play, that would help. Happy Belated Halloween! ;)

  5. It is because of you that I removed my music. So I know this wasn't my blog, Ha!:)
    This is funnier that heck.

  6. Hi Nell ~

You and I have discussed this privately and I thank you for putting up with my music. :-)

I do have music on my blog but it is all instrumental and soothing. I am with you on trying to find embedded players on blogs when the screaming music comes on that is NOT to my liking. I cannot read with music that has words.

Busy, overcrowded blogs are a pain to view, and having to hunt for players is awful.

I did take a tip or two from one of your posts, moved my player to the top, so that it is easy to find. Told guests they can turn it off, and also explained that it is soothing, peaceful music. I've had many compliments on the music.

I do understand people being turned off by embedded music though.

    Love and hugs ~ FlowerLady

  7. For the longest time I had music on my blog... seems it causes problems with load times as well, BUT saw the light when I found myself experiencing the same frustrations as you when visiting other blogs. It really is a personal preference but my traffic has increased since I lost the music. Coincidental, I don't think so! Great post!

  8. Hi Nell Jean, I too love music, but when it blares out midway through a post, then again during the comment process, it is distracting to a fault. I have started keeping the sound on mute when blog visiting just for that reason. Having the widget at the top gives us a warning when we forget to mute the computer.

  9. Hi Nell Jean, I'm with you. I do not like to listen to music on blogs. So I keep my sound on mute. The few occasions when forget are a surprise, as something unwanted starts to disturb the air.

  10. Mute my computer! Not! I should miss Flower Garden Girl's videos?
There are things I want to hear, like videos of people giving a tour of a garden and describing features. Those require choosing to listen. I should not have to adjust my setting.

Note: Clicks to Comment interrupt the music if it is ON.

  11. You've been giving a lot of great tips, and we respect you for doing so:-) When I first started my blog, I added music--because it was a novelty for me. I didn't realize that not everyone's computer loads the same as mine...due to internet connections, type of computer, etc. One day another blogger mentioned it to me, and I haven't regretted taking it off. In fact, once I started visiting people with music, I realized how problematic it can be. I like to turn on my own music at home, or on my computer, while I'm reading blogs.

  12. Very funny post, Nell, I agree about the music. There is one gentleman who has music on his blog that I love to listen to, but it is a slow, low jazz and very unusual. I love it. It isn't very loud also, but I think it would not be the same if it were. I would not like it so much.

  13. I missed this post yesterday. I leave my speakers of all the time, so it isn't isn't an issue.

  14. One last word. Even if you turn off your sound, if your internet access is NOT unlimited service, you will be running a tab on the download as long as you're on that page and the music is playing. Music and Videos use many Megabytes of your precious bytes.

It would be common courtesy to let the visitor elect to turn ON the music rather than forcing it on him/her because of possible costs to those who have limited service.

Or, if it is an issue, just make a little list of blogs to avoid.
