Giant Swallowtail (videos)

Giant Swallowtails Papilio cresphontes are among the butterflies visiting now.

Much larger than the other flying beauties,
others tend to brush them aside as if considering them intruders.

Watch for a Gulf Frit and a Pipevine Swallowtail giving chase.

... this was the best territorial show of all.

Secrets of a Seedscatterer

  1. I had no idea that butterflies could be territorial or aggressive toward each other!

  2. Great videos. I do like your stills. Are they from the video?

  3. The stills are just regular snapshots. This butterfly never landed and held his wings still: flutter, flutter, flutter.

  4. Nell, I enjoyed the videos and stills. I did miss your lovely southern accent though!

I had lots of the Giant Swallowtails on the phlox this year; most are gone now.

  5. I would love to see butterfly's like these in our garden, they have almost deserted us this year.

  6. Swallowtails are incredibly beautiful. We've had more in the garden this year. Love seeing them float from flower to flower.

I look forward to comments and questions and lively discussion of gardening and related ideas.
